And speaking of tournaments ...

Here's what looks like a good one for anyone who might be in the Atlanta area for MomoCon on the weekend of March 14-15. This information comes from our own Big Head Zach, writer of many strategy articles and tweaker of much Cosmic Encounter Online code:
We'll be running games of C.E. all weekend, free to play, open to anyone who wants to jump in! However, if you want a shot at some cool prizes, you can purchase tickets to have the games you play count in a running competition that lasts until Sunday afternoon, where the top 5 players will square off in an Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny (tm) to see who is the Supreme Ruler Of The Universe, Bwahaha (tm).

The entry fee is $5 to have your games tracked. This fee is reduced to $3 if you are in a sci-fi themed costume (please, cosplayers, come have fun where I can see you!).

All games will use the 4-Planet variant (for quicker games), and feature 30 of the 50 aliens in the box (picked to allow variety but minimize newbie frustration). There are no other changes from the basic rules.

The plan is to have two copies of the game available to play (meaning 10 people can be playing at any given moment). If players cannot decide how to group themselves together to play, the staff will randomly seat people.
That's the basic version. For the full announcement, follow this link.

"tweaker of much Cosmic Encounter Online code"? Is this official? Has this already begun? If so... hooray!

It's a tad slow-going, what with all of us involved having full-time jobs (except maybe me, in a month, *grrrr*)... but already the first intended modification to the game is to add the Rebirth Artifact. After that, and I get the underlying code in my head, we'll look at some of the bugs. The tricksy part of the whole thing is that the only way your client knows what the hell is going on is by a series of simple and not-so-simple XML messages. You're literally at the mercy of the internets when it comes to having a legitimate, up-to-date account of the game that the server is running - I think that can be the source of some of the perceived bugs.

Ah, that's cool. We all greatly appreciate the effort. Rebirth would be nice to have. I know Unzap is the more frequently requested, but I am crossing my fingers that Victory Boon is next as it is my favorite of the Eon artifacts. :)

But back on topic, doesn't look like I'll make MomoCon. Hope it goes well.

Slight segue here:

Zach, I just helped Peter test the new pods for Thursday. Setting aside the cray ones ... what about just flat-out adding three or four pods to the regular game? Like a 7 and a 9 or two?

It seems to me -- the non-coder -- that you could just pop them in there.

As a programmer, it would be very easy to just add new attacks to the deck.

Unzap, though...You would need to add in an extra ten-second delay after the player is zapped, and then another one after the Unzap in case the power is zapped again or the Unzap is unzapped. Would really slow things down unless the Unzap became a "this pod gets used automatically when you get zapped unless you zap yourself" concept.

To fill you in on a secret...

Attacks are easy to add to the deck - as a matter of fact, they've done it in the past with April Fools' and other occasions.

As long as it's not a new type of card/pod, any existing card type can be added, and any value of Attack can be added. (Until someone decides to code the Mirror alien.)

To more accurately answer your question, Duke, in theory we could easily approximate the same deck makeup as FFG's version (save for the new artifact types, and the Card Zap), or come up with any deck variant we want. Having it be choosable by the players is another matter, and more of a long term goal (customizable game options).

Yeah, I figured Attacks would be pretty easy. I also understand that balance is crucial: when adding to the deck, it's probably best to try for the same percentages of Attacks, Ns, and Artifacts. So, adding three Attacks, for example, means you'd want to take a long look at adding maybe one more N, too (plus, Rebirth, when it's finished).

I was mostly just tossing it out there. I've been playing with the exact same 63 pods since the day I joined in 2005, so I'd love to spice things up a bit.

Hey hey, wasn't Quash added later? Or was that already around in 05?

Quash was there when I got there. I got so used to seeing it, in fact, that I became convinced it had been in the original Eon set. When I did some research later, I couldn't believe that it really **wasn't** there in 1978.

The "Quash" name was my microscopic permanent contribution to the game. CEO was looking for a different name than previously used. I think I got it from one of the law shows I used to watch.

I think I got an easy idea for Unzap...First, make it so that Unzap can be turned "on" or "off" at any time by clicking on it. If Unzap is on, then it launches itself when someone else tries to zap you. You could code it so it wouldn't waste itself (such as unzapping Virus, but the opponent played an N).

Pod Zap could be similar, although you'd need a checklist of what you want it to use itself on.
