News, notes, and anecdotes from the world of COSMIC ENCOUNTER, the greatest game ev-ah! There's lots of COSMIC ENCOUNTER ONLINE discussion here, too (and even some DUNE)
C'mon Duke, you know you love it. No more whining!
I enjoyed everything about that preview ...... except for the part about Sniveler.I like the Rewards Deck so much, in fact, I'd love to see it added to CE Online.
I like how all the new content is labelled with a "CI" somewhere, so it's easy to sort out and play with just the original stuff.Rifts look like you can save anyone's ships, but when someone grabs the card (on accident or on purpose), it blows up on them. The "3" in the corner tells me that different rifts work on different numbers of ships.I'm assuming that when a card from the Rewards Deck is discarded, it goes into the rewards discard as opposed to the normal discard. Why is there a -04 in the Rewards Deck (something with cards you usually want)? Presumably that means there'll be something bigger than 40 in there.Hey, Zombie gets compensation through a Crooked Deal! (Still not against Void, though.)
Part of the charm of the Rewards deck is that it isn't a rock-solid guarantee that you'll get something great when you take rewards there. And of course, it depends on what aliens are in the game. If you have Anti-Matter or Loser, an Attack -04 is pretty good to have.
It was rather interesting for me to read this article. Thanx for it. I like such themes and anything connected to them. I definitely want to read a bit more on that blog soon.
What I like about the Rewards deck is that it fixes an obvious problem* with the game: that there is little incentive to ally with the defense early in the game (when presumably you will have few ships in the warp, and more than enough cards). This gives an incentive to help the defense out early on, instead of the all-too-common pattern of everyone teaming up with the offense, then scrambling to defend once someone is close to winning.*Note that when I say “obvious,” I am not saying that I really noticed the problem. But now that this new deck is available, I can see how it would balance out the gameplay early on.
I have long held that one could add the kitchen sink to the Cosmic Encounter and it would balance out. Balance is in the eye of the beholder when the beholder is the winner.Hmm, Kitchen Sink: the power to..........
I generally ally with the defense early on, actually. Not only do you not always start off with the most wonderful hand, but your good cards quickly drain out, and I like to be prepared. But I'm glad this rewards deck adds incentive for less wary players. I like long games, and everyone going on offense early on doesn't help matters.
I'm much more likely to ally with the defense, in virtually all stages of the game.Cards > ships in CE; I've been preaching that one for a long time now.
I've always felt that the Attack -04 is the ideal card... if you're the Virus going against Antimatter.
I would figure that just like the main deck, a fractional part of the cards are great for specific situations, but are otherwise stinkers (low Attacks fit this in general).Caveat emptor.
Does anyone know if the Rewards Deck cards will have the same back as the encounter deck?
